The Hare With Amber Eyes: The Illustrated Edition

The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance is Edmund de Waal’s acclaimed memoir recounting the story of his inheritance from his great-uncle of a collection of 264 netsuke, small Japanese wood and ivory carvings. He traces his family’s history through this collection, from fin de siècle Paris to twentieth-century Vienna and postwar Tokyo. A central chapter recounts the plunder of their possessions by the Nazis and how the netsuke, small enough to be secreted away by a loyal maid during the war, were preserved. With vivid and incisive writing, de Waal reflects on the power and meaning of sight, touch, loss, and memory. This illustrated edition is enhanced by numerous photographs from the author's research and family archives, together with images of the netsuke collection.
