Overview:
Khazaria was a major political and economic power at the crossroads of Europe and Asia during the early Middle Ages. Militarily, Khazaria is best known for blunting the Muslim advance north of the Caucasus mountains, and participated in several other pivotal wars. Policies of the Khazar government influenced the migration of various peoples and this led to the creation of the nations of Bulgaria and Hungary. Khazaria's cities served as trading centers for major east-west and north-south trade routes. In the 9th century, the Khazarian royalty and nobility as well as a significant portion of the Khazarian population converted to Judaism. The last chapter examines evidence for and against modern Ashkenazic Jews descending from the Khazars.
